The meeting point for the day’s trip was the Area Theatre, Bandiana. Everyone was eager for a good 4WD trip and, after a brief run down on the trip (with particular emphasis on the importance of convoy procedure and looking after your vehicle), we headed off through Allans Flat and onto Myrtleford. Nine vehicle formed the convoy and two more vehicles
joined the group at Myrtleford. Smoko was enjoyed at Riverside Park in Porpunkah and it was then through Bright and onto Wandiligong where we took a short walk to view the Chinese diggings and bridge. The Chinese bridge was an amazing structure and we all stopped to read the stories portrayed on the notice boards on the bridge. The history of this area is just amazing. The population of Wandiligong in the 1860’s was 2,000, with approx. 500 being Chinese migrants.
On our way again, eventually turning onto Morses Creek Track. This was the first part of the dirt road, so the convoy was spread out to avoid the dust. Morses Creek Road became Mongrel Creek Track and we followed this along, with a couple of very steep uphills. At the intersection of Mongrel Creek Track, West Gully Track, Cemetery Lane and Albion Track we enjoyed lunch before continuing up Albion Track. Again a few very steep inclines and declines, with some great views while we travelled along the ridge. We followed Albion Track and then turned left at West Ovens Track which became Mill Road and arrived in Harrietville before heading back through Bright and on to Ovens where we turned onto Rosewhite Road and then back into Wodonga.
We hope to run more trips into the mountains very soon.
