7 vehicles headed off from Bandiana to meet up with one further vehicle at Tallangatta for morning tea and a look at ‘Sandy the war horse’. Off the black top and onto Cravensville Road, kicking up plenty of dust, and we were up into the bush. 3 kms in we aired down ready to get serious. Well, no, not really serious, too many funny buggers in the crew, pointing out the feral cat beside the road, which was of course a massive piece of CAT machinery surrounded by some bushes. You never know what you’re going to see up here.
Lunch by the Dart River, and then onto the Benambra-Corryong Road, driving through tan coloured flour billowing up from the truck traversed, but well-formed, dirt road. Dust? Did I say dust? Wowsers. By the time we ‘carefully’ drove through some lovely big puddles, the fourbees were varying shades of brown. Ours was browner than most, as my driver has a particular penchant for muddy holes in the track. Ah well, more fun at the carwash later.
Eustace Creek Campground was chockers, so we enjoyed the view for a short while, and then turned around and headed to Stacey’s Bridge campground, which was arguably a much nicer spot for camping with grass underfoot, plenty of space to spread out and not hear each other snoring, a cracking and ‘magical’ campfire to share, and the gentle music of the river to fall asleep to.
Day 2 and one of our stops was Wheelers Creek Hut, which is a new hut complete with a fire box inside and a water tank. Gorgeous spot for serious campers. There were quite a few stunning camping spots, remote, quiet, and off the grid up that way. Unfortunately, Marginal Track was partially closed, NOT. The detour was epic fun, very steep and while some trekkers preferred to enjoy the beautiful Thowgla Falls, while others preferred to go back up and come down again, and again, cos, why not?
Great trip, lots of laughs, good driving, and beautiful country, shared with top company.
